STAR Education's KidStarter camp is a place where creativity goes wild through design and engineering.  Whether we are teaching a session about engineering or art, the interdisciplinary principles of the product design process process will always take center stage, allowing the students to learn about the creative process behind the aesthetics and functionality of everyday prodcuts.

KIDSTARTER CAMP

June 19th and 20th, 2013
The Toy Design and Prototyping Workshop takes students through the process of creating their own suite of superheroes and monsters.  This workshop focuses on the following activities?

  • Brainstorm the "look" and "hook" of their superheores and monsters

  • Use computer modeling to create unique, sculpted models of the creature designs

  • Rapid prototype the final creature using an in house 3-D printer

  • As our toy company's official graphic designers, the students will make a logo design to brand their product.

  • Create a fun, flying toy that showcases the company logo design

  • Guest Speaker:  Learn the basics of character development, concept art and sketching from a professional feature-film animator

June 21st and 24th

The Furniture Design and Prototyping Workshop will make student's imaginations go wild in the world of lighting and chair design.  This workshop focuses on the following activities:

  • Work as a design team to create custom-made cardboard lamps

  • Use 3-D CAD to create didgital models of the lamp design

  • Learn the basics of circuitry, and build LED arrays, that will be used as the light bulb in the final lamp

  • Design and contruct three small-scale chair desgins, focusing on using different materials for each chair

  • Guest Speaker:  Carla Hartman of the Eames office

June 25th and 26th

The Automotive Engineering and Design Workshop will allow the students to understand the guts and glamour behind everyday cars.  This workshop focuses on the following activities:

  • Learn the basics of gears, motors, and power transmission

  • Engineer a zippy roadster to race across the room...may the fastest car win!

  • Dive into the world of car body desing, and sculpt a clay prototype of their "Cars of the Future"

  • Test and refine their car bodies in a classroom wind tunnel, while learning the basics of aerodynamics

  • Guest Speakers:  Art Center Speaker, Glapin Auto Sports Speaker

June June 27th and 28th

The Robotics Engineering and Design Workshop takes our budding designers and engineers to a new level of innovation by teaching them the fundamentals of robotics desgin.  This workshop will focus on the following activites:

  • Learn the basics of automation, logic, and computer programming through mastering LEGO Robotics

  • Robotics Challenge Mania- As this workshop progressses, the students will be challenged to solve problems, accomplish tasks, follow a course, or do anythign they design their robot to do

  • Guest Speaker:  An Engineer/ Scientist from JPL will be discussing the design and engineering behind the Mars Rover Mission

July 1 and 2nd

The Final Engineering and Design Challenge will be a Chain Reaction Masterpiece!

  • The students will be put into teams, where they will be challenged to desing and build their own multi-step Rube Goldberg machine.

  • Now that the students have learned the basics of the design process, concept sketching, prototyping, mechanics, electricla circuits and robotics, they will be challenged to put together a brand new masterpiece, that all starts with a domino... or a superheroe, or a lamp, or a car, or a robot.

  • The possibilities are endless!

July 3rd Final Showing: 1:30-3:00

Friends and family are invited from 1:30-3:00 to attend a final Engineering and Design Showcase.  Here students will have a chance to show off their final projects and help lead and engineering and design workshop for all of the attendees.

Kidstarter Camp is divided into 5 different workshop challenges:

  • Toy Design and Prototyping

  • Furniture Design- Structural Engineering & Prototyping

  • Automotive Engineering and Desgin Prototyping

  • Robotics Engineering and Design Prototyping Final

  • Engineering and Design Challenge
