DAY 4

After morning warm-up, and a an impromptu piano recital by Greg, the crews went into full pre-production mode.

Starting with a table read through up in the editing suite, they then battled the challenging task of organizing props and costumes.  The editing suite soon resembled a walk-in closet belonging to a detective with a penchant for wrinkles.

With the important question of "Oh my gosh, what should I wear?" satisfactorily answered, both companies finished their storyboards using computer software to create the images, and printing out hard copies to cut and paste the old fashioned way.

At lunch time people were about to burst with all the energy that's generated from the creative process, so Alex and Greg headed over to the high school field with the gang to run around and let off some steam.  By the time they came back, everyone was ready to focus on the technical aspects of filming.

Alex took everyone through some principles of sound, how to operate a boom mic correctly, and the correct way to handle camera equipment when you're on set.

Did you know that if an equipment bag is never left fully open even if it's empty?  The code is that if both the snaps are closed then the equipment's in the bag, and if only one of the snaps is closed then the equipment is out of the bag and in use.  Who knew?

Apart from people in the movie industry obviously.

Next we went through who does what job on a movie set.  In our small prodcution companies, Dream House Studios and Nova Productions, comprised of six and five people respectively, every member of the crew is a producer, director, camera operator actor, and sound technicican at some point!  We're truly getting an all round experience of movie-making!

Lastly, here's the shot I never thought I'd get!

Danny's extremely fast, and always manages to turn away at the last minute when I'm trying to sneakily take a picture of him.

Got him this time!

(Although I suspect he let me catch him out of pity....)
